Epoch released the nine kinds of families in 1985 as the first families. Brown Rabbit, Gray Rabbit, Squirrel, Brown Bear, Gray Bear, Raccoon Dog, Gray Mouse, Mole, and Fox. They were designed in the motif of early American style in the early 1900s. The colors of the families were mainly brown or gray and had a simple design.
In 1987, following the big hit of Sylvanian Families' First release, five families, Owl, Raccoon, Ivory Rabbit, Skunk, and Beaver, were launched. Ivory Rabbit with a bent ear got so popular and had been the main character until the Chocolate Rabbit appeared.
